Defrost gradually in winter
Blasting hot air on a frozen windshield creates a sharp temperature difference that can turn a small chip into a long crack. Start the defroster on low and let the glass warm up gradually. Never pour hot water on frozen glass.
Use the right ice scraper
Use a plastic scraper and a snow brush. Metal tools and keys scratch glass, and scratches scatter light from oncoming headlights at night.
Replace wiper blades regularly
Worn wipers streak and can drag grit across the glass. Replace blades about once a year — many drivers switch to winter blades in late fall.
Keep your distance on gravel and highways
Most stone chips come from trucks and vehicles ahead on highways like the 417. Leaving extra following distance reduces the chance of a chip.
Repair chips right away
A chip repaired early costs far less than a replacement and is often covered by insurance with no deductible.
