The loonie rule
Most common rock chip breaks — half-moon, bullseye and star — can be repaired if the damage is no bigger than a loonie. Larger damage, or cracks spreading from the chip, usually require a new windshield.
Temporary protection until your appointment
- Cover the chip with clear tape to keep dirt and water out
- Avoid blasting the defroster on a frozen windshield
- Skip the car wash until the chip is repaired
- Avoid slamming doors, which can flex the glass
